James S. Russell
James S. Russell, FAIA, is the newly appointed Director of Design Strategic Initiatives at the NYC Department of Design and Construction, where his research and analysis touches sustainability, resilience, and equity. As an architecture journalist and critic, he has written for publications such as The Economist, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and Atlantic’s CityLab, and been a regular commentator for WNYC and Bloomberg radio and television. James was previously the Bloomberg News architecture critic and an editor at Architectural Record magazine, where he facilitated recognition such as a National Magazine Award. His book, The Agile City: Building Well Being and Wealth in an Era of Climate Change (Island Press), argues that adaptation can quickly slow global warming and blunt its effects. James has taught at City College and is a Fellow of the AIA. He lives in New York.
