James S. Russell

James S. Rus­sell, FAIA, is the new­ly appoint­ed Direc­tor of Design Strate­gic Ini­tia­tives at the NYC Depart­ment of Design and Con­struc­tion, where his research and analy­sis touch­es sus­tain­abil­i­ty, resilience, and equi­ty. As an archi­tec­ture jour­nal­ist and crit­ic, he has writ­ten for pub­li­ca­tions such as The Econ­o­mist, Wall Street Jour­nal, New York Times, and Atlantic’s City­Lab, and been a reg­u­lar com­men­ta­tor for WNYC and Bloomberg radio and tele­vi­sion. James was pre­vi­ous­ly the Bloomberg News archi­tec­ture crit­ic and an edi­tor at Archi­tec­tur­al Record mag­a­zine, where he facil­i­tat­ed recog­ni­tion such as a Nation­al Mag­a­zine Award. His book, The Agile City: Build­ing Well Being and Wealth in an Era of Cli­mate Change (Island Press), argues that adap­ta­tion can quick­ly slow glob­al warm­ing and blunt its effects. James has taught at City Col­lege and is a Fel­low of the AIA. He lives in New York.
